Solar battery

A home battery, also known as a residential storage battery, is a system that stores electricity for later use. It mainly stores excess solar energy, which you can then use when the sun isn't shining, making you less dependent on the power grid and reducing your energy costs. You can also use a home battery in combination with a dynamic energy contract to buy electricity when prices are low and sell it back later when prices are higher.

How does it work?

Charging: During the day, electricity generated by your solar panels that you do not immediately consume is stored in the battery.

Usage: In the evening or on cloudy days, you can use the stored electricity to power your home.

Dynamic contract: Some home batteries can also be charged with grid power when prices are low, to be used or sold later when prices are high.

What should you consider?

Capacity: The required storage capacity depends on your solar panel system and your energy consumption. A rule of thumb is to calculate 1 to 1.5 kWh of storage for every kWp of your solar panels.

Costs: The price of a home battery depends on its capacity, with costs ranging from a few thousand to tens of thousands of euros for larger systems.

Lifespan: Pay attention to the number of charge cycles. An average household is best off choosing a battery that lasts at least 3,500 charge cycles, similar to the lifespan of a telephone.

Safety: Ensure that the battery is installed safely. Many modern systems, such as lithium iron phosphate models, are safer than older systems.

Return on investment: The payback period can depend on the initial cost, system efficiency, future energy prices, and net metering regulations.
